The lobby

Impairment and Deafness is continuing. The network around the world of
colleagues who want to help is growing. On March 12, 2008 we
had a very successful meeting in
03-25-2008:
In the Opening Session of the 6th SAARC meeting in Dhaka, Bangladesh in February 2008, the General Secretary addressed the Minister of Health explaining the need for prevention for Hearing Impairment and Deafness and the influence on the first and second millennium goal.
Bangladesh has now 100% primary education, but a high percentage of the children have problems with hearing with consequences for their education, because of chronic otitis media and other ear diseases. Primary ear care integrated in primary health care is a start for prevention. The minister promised to take this issue serious and a program is in preparation.
Primary ear care integrated in primary health care as sustainable prevention is also on the agenda in India. We hope to start also in some pilot countries in Africa. Dr. Johan Fagan from Cape Town in South Africa started training programs for ENT specialists for African ENT doctors. IFOS will support this initiative. It is difficult to get Hearing on the programs but together we will succeed.
10-20-2007:
The preparations to distribute the screening hearing test as tool of awareness in different countries and in different languages is in progress.
So far these tests which can be done by cell phone or via a website are very successful. People like to do hearing tests unanimously. Those who are interested can contact IFOS office for further details.
During the Academy meeting in Washington September 2007, a very successful session was organized on the prevention of Hearing loss. The Humanitarian committee of the Academy with Dr. James Saunders also produced a CD, Hearing Loss Prevention a Global Challenge with a lot of information. If you are interested please contact the American Academy. IFOS needs more colleagues who are interested in this most important issue.
Please join us.
