Welcome to IFOSWorld

The Executive Board meeting 2010 took place in Seoul, South Korea, on April 22. We had a very successful meeting, a majority of the 18 Executive members was present despite the International flight problems due to the volcano eruption in Iceland.

The meeting was held in conjunction with the National ENT Society meeting. Members of the Executive and Counselors, participated in an IFOS symposium.

During the Board meeting a lot of subjects were discussed and voted for. The minutes of the meeting will be prepared in due time. We memorized Dr. Antonio de la Cruz, who passed away in 2009. Dr. David Kennedy was elected as Regional Secretary for North America and the Caribbean, Dr. Milan Profant was elected as candidate General Secretary of IFOS to take over from Dr. Jan J. Grote at the end of this year. Dr. Milan Profant is chairman of the University ENT Department of Bratislava, Slovak Republic. He is internationally well known and at present General Secretary of the European Federation of ORL Societies. He will be an excellent successor as General Secretary of IFOS.

Important developments are taking place in the worldwide action for the prevention of hearing impairment and deafness. I will report on this in due time. The societies received the reports and dues. I hope they will take action and that they will also update the information on their society on our website.

Jan J. Grote
General Secretary IFOS

Educational Committee

During the XIXth World Congress in Sao Paulo, the initiatives of the Educational Committee were discussed in the Executive Committee meetings of Sunday May 31st and June 4th and were approved during the General Assembly.
The paper on minimum requirements of an ENT training worldwide are combined with the initiative of Dr. Johan Fagan from Cape Town to start with an ENT training program within the Developing Countries. This training program should be totally different from the training programs in Developed Countries because of their need and possibilities and their different incidence of disease and complications. The need for ENT training in Africa alone is now 5000 ENT specialists (see article Dr. Fagan).
